RobO's Backyard Hydroponics! HomeThis is a featured page

Hi there!

Ok, I have to just come out and say it. I love Hydroponics. As an engineer, I love building things. I also love inorganic (and organic) chemistry. And you have to admit, plant biology is pretty cool, too. What other hobby comes close to combining so many disciplines? Sure, there's some work involved, but that's where the fun is!

Another interesting feature of this hobby is how flexibly it can be implemented. It can done on a shoe-string budget, or you can spend hundreds of dollars. It can scale from a single small plant sitting in a window sill to as many plants as you can maintain. You can operate it indoors or outdoors. You can use a greenhouse, or you can expose it to the elements. It really is entirely up to you!

So, why the wiki on this? Well, I'm creating it for a number of reasons. I was about to blog about my current hydroponic project (hydroponic watermelons), but quickly realized that while a blog my be good for tracking daily progress, it just wasn't a good fit for material that should be linked together. Secondly, there is a lot of information out there (on the web, and in some very, very old books). I needed a way to consolidate it for my own use without having to go track something down everytime I needed to reference it (e.g., how exactly did I calculate the amound of KNO3 to add?) I also wanted to document some of the things I've learned from my own experiences, and share all this with anyone of like mind who might stumble upon this humble site and find it useful.
